I personally like the 220 swift in a Ruger No. 1. This gun is extremely accurate right out of the box. Ammo can be spendy but reloading will definately get you even more accuracy. delkmon, i have hunted unit 39 several years now and the one thing i can tell you from my experience is that scouting will only go so far. with the presure certain areas are getting the deer movement is erratic and not very easy to pattern. and i am sure you know that unless we get any weather, snow...

great shot!! true, shots at this range take practice, it is not just the gun. I shoot the same caliber and made a similar connection on a cow hunt last year. the 300wsm with a 130gr barnes triple shock knocked her down at just over 500yards

rifle choice
my old standby was the 30-06. but my new favorite is the 300wsm. I shoot it in a winchester featherweight with a leupold vari x III and a barnes triple shock 130grains. scopes
being from Idaho and growing up hunting mule deer and elk. I have always used a scope and come to think of it....a scope is a must have for the long range shooting done out west. 300 yards is close and my eyes are not nearly good enough to have ever used open sights.
