Re: Avintaquin 7th

That will be a COLD hunt. I had a friend that made a mistake on his entry and got a Dec tag a couple of years ago. It was bitter cold in that canyon the first week of Dec. We rode horses in and it was pretty brutal. Snow was 2 foot deep and had a very thick crust. Almost impossible for the horses to...

Re: random elk question

The area I hunt has a few resident elk all summer. We have harvested a few nice bulls during the LE hunts in September. But the canyon really fills up with elk in October. By late October during the deer hunt, I frequently see 200-400 elk per day as large herds have moved into the area. The area I h...

Re: Best Caliber??

I've shot 7 elk with my 270 WSM, It works just fine. A friend of mine took a 270WSM to Alaska and shot a moose. Again it worked just fine. You can share brass with your husband. Load it like a 270WCF for deer/antelope, Load it up to max for Magnum performance when hunting the bigger animals. I still...

Re: Valles Caldera

They have a booth at the Hunting Expo this week. They are promoting the ranch. The state wants it to be self sufficent. You buy a lottery ticket for $25. If you are lucky and draw, then you get to buy a tag from the New Mexico Fish & game at the normal Resident/Non Resident price. the fellow manning...

Re: Ut LE Rifle tag

NH Hunter, I relate to that comment. Last fall after 17 days in the desert looking for a Bighorn Ram, and passing on smaller rams. My wife told me. "Just kill the Beast"

Not only was the season winding down, by my wifes patience had expired.

Re: Ut LE Rifle tag

I've been looking at this myself, Trying to decide which unit to put in for. I've been putting in for the San Juan. Looking at last years draw, Even max point ( which was 14 last year and will be 15 this year) The San Juan was a 1:3.2 for the regular hunt and 1:8 for the Premium. So even having max ...

Re: fillmore poachers caught!!!W/pic

The penalty just isn't stiff enough. Many people will pay $8000 to hunt a trophy elk. Go to any of the Banquets this spring and see what Trophy Bull elk tags sell for. A lot of them will be $15,000. So why should 3 poachers have to split $8000 between them for breaking the law on something that a wi...
