Re: New hunter...NEED HELP!
I have never hunted Utah. I hunt deer and elk in Colorado but I would recomend calling the local wardens and biologists for the area you drew. WheneverI am hunting a new area I call these people plus local taxidermists and they are more than happy to help you out. Also spend hours looking at topo ma...

Re: Eastmans Journal member research area... any good?
The information is a good jump off point. They show tough and not so tough draws. I hunt at leats three states a year and have found once I choose an area it is a must to contact local wardens and biologists. They are always willing to help you with choosing a specific area to suit your style of hun...

I put in for an early rifle tag in unit 36 but no luck. I did draw my second choice archery tag. As soon as the snow melts I will be backpacking into my spot and getting set up. I cant wait.

Re: Montana Decoys
A lot of people like them. I was calling a bull at timberline with the montana decoy about 20 yards away from me. As the bull crested the hill he stopped, loked at the decoy then turned and ran. My brother and I just started laughing hysterically. He probably winded us but we still joke about that.

Re: 2007 Utah buck (first muzzle loader)
Good buck. I usually hunt archery but spent a few points on a black powder tag this year. I have been watching a buck at timberline for 2 months. I hope he stays put like yours did.

Re: any advice for a rookie?
I would hunt every chance you get. Put a lot of miles on the boots and find a few water holes far away from any roads with mature buck tracks aaround them. January is the better time to hunt but it is hot in september and they need the water so you have a good chance of bagging a nice buck.
