Re: unit pick for mule deer, colorado

I'd look at the Gunnison Basin. Great genetics and the deer took a big hit in the winter of 2007-08, but there are still some big deer there. and it is magnificnet country.

Good hunting and glad to hear you are gearing up with the grandsons.

Re: High Country hunting help

There are lots of good high country hunts in CO. You can get good intel off of a computer and from friends, but there is absolutely no substitute for getting "boots on the land." So pick a unit and be sure to go there, best during August. Get acquainted and develop a strategy. And then get a backup ...

Re: Giant Buck Killed on Winter Range

That buck is a big-time stud. I'd be curious about his score. He's one of the best deer I've seen in Wyoming this year. Too bad the song dogs got him. Yep- kill those predators. I try every time I see one, but they are smart buggers.

Re: Colorado 2012

I did not draw - again. But I'm at least up to 3 points so maybe I'll get something soon. I hope to snag a landowner voucer so I can go hunting again in Colorado. Should find out pretty soon. Good luck to all; hope it is a memorable and successful season.

Re: Which one would you shoot?

Which ever one I saw first because I could not wait for the other. But if they were together, I'd shoot the nontypical. I've never cared about record books; still don't.

Re: Early Oct. WY Weather ???

I live in SE Wyoming and there's a lot of variation in the area. From over 10,000 feet to about 4,000 feet. That said, the weather could be anything from 80+ and bright sun to about 10 degrees above with snow and wind. Bring layers and be prepared for big temperature swings. October can really vary ...

Re: Unit 55/Gunnison district.

I don't know the specific area and have only been through there a few times. But please read the high coutry thread and know that those guys are right. Those bucks will be up at the very highest points in basins with good habitat and will likley still be in bachelor groups. Get up high, do some hiki...

Re: WY Unit 87

I'm an outfitter and guide and you don't really need a guide in that area. But I would recommend coming for the very end of the deer season. Since you were lucky in the speed goat drawing, that does not sound "doable" but it is likley the best deer hunting. Most of the area is public and there's a w...

Re: Closest Kill

My closest rifle shot was with my old 270 at about 15 yards. Funny thing is my closest bow shot is 23 yards. I've likley killed over 100 critters with my rifle, though and only 4 with a bow, so it is a little unfair to compare. I've only killed 5 critters with a muzz and the closest of those was abo...

Re: 2011 Big Muddy Saskatchewan Muley

That buck is a big-time stud. Congrats to the hunter. Is there more of a story? Info on stalk, score, etc?

I would also go there just to take pics or shed hunt. I really don't have time right now, but it sure looks like a place to go look at mule deer. Thanks for sharing.
