Re: Carry a sidearm while archery elk hunting?

I carry a sidearm when bow hunting. There are a number of bow hunters in this area (Western Wyoming) that have problems with lions coming in when cow calling. They have all successfully deterred lions by intimidation with noise and motion, but I could have my sidearm at the ready in a couple of seco...

Re: Best high country boots?

A number of good brands listed above. People's feet are unique enough that what may be a great boot for one might not be so for another. The best I've found for my feet are Vasque's. Comfortable, easily broke in, and durable.

Re: choosing a cow to shoot without a calf, how?

As stated, the yearlings are smaller than the other cows, but bigger than the calves. The calves look small because they are next to the cows. I shot a calf two years ago. He was at least as big as the 4 point buck I shot a few weeks earlier. They are plenty old enough to do fine without mama.

As stated, get a new string, properly spined arrows. The old bows, if mechnically sound, will do the trick. I haven't hunted with a compound in years, but the old hoyt gamegetter I had seemed to kill an animal as efficiently as the new ones. You will no doubt get more performance out of the newer on...

Yeah, definately family first. If there is a problem work it out. My wife's birthday is during the bowhunt. Some years I hunt that day, some years I don't. We've tended to celebrate birthdays on days other than the actual birthday. Celebrate your aniversary, take out to a nice dinner, maybe a weeken...

I have an etrex as well. Excellent unit. If you use radios when you hunt: I have a Rhino 110 as well. Both the GPS and radio are great.

I've exclusively used the Winchester 165 gr. Super-X® Pointed Soft Points. May be others that perform better, but these have done a great job on elk, deer, and antelope. Get a good group out of my gun.

You didn't say if they were in the same area as the cattle. They often like a little mineral/salt--natural or otherwise. Predator control can have a positive impact no doubt. I don't know much about them, but if one were to encourage the types of naturel forage they like as well as the alphalpha, it...

Savage 110, 30-06, Winchester 165 grain soft points. A combo that has never failed me on several antelope, mulies, or elk.
