I'd go with the .260 to keep weight down. Ounces are important when spending days hiking the high country. But onthe other hand the .25-06 is the more versatile cartridge.

Take 135 north out of Gunnison, go a few miles, turn left up a long valley, hunt elk.

I'll be next door in 55 if you get stuck as the road is a bit iffy near the top some times.

Best hotel in world is the Comfort Inn on rt 50 in downtown Gunnison. Rooms about $59 in hunt season.

When I bought an ATV ( actually ATC ) I was cautioned against getting a 250 or smaller as at high elevation they run out of power(so do I). WE BOTH FINALLY DREW BUCK TAGS FOR UNIT 55. IT'S TAKEN THREE YEARS. I CAN SMELL THE VENISON COOKING ALREADY. NOW I JUST GOTTA LOCATE SOME UNIT 55 BULL ELKS.

We put in for 3forks Ranch RFW bull elk tags with no hope of draw. We didnt draw but got the points accumulated. We like the OTC bull tags anyway, but in a few yrs we'll draw 3forks once the points accumulate and I can take the wife on a first class hunt I coulndt afford otherwise.

I wish all the gun mfrs would make a 6-5-284 so the price$ would come down.
