i usually use a my 22 for cottontails, and whatever is handy for jacks. I would love to try it with my muzzleloader though sounds fun.

I hunt rabbits, cotten tail and jack with a 12ga.

Jack rabbit makes good stew and chilli.

.17 HMR or 10/22. Killed a jack at 100 yds. with my 10/22 today, knocked it right over. Use my shotgun at times too.

For cottontails. If there are a lot of them, I use a semi auto 22 Pistol to make it challenging. In thicker cover and when they will not be holding well, I use a 12 GA with Cyl choke and a #6 1 oz or less game load.
For Jackrabbits, I use a 22mag and take only head shots. Note on the Jacks, you would be surprised, take the backstraps, cut into thin little steaks, season with a little sage, salt, and pepper and pan fry in saved bacon grease and they make a good substitute for breakfast sausage.
