Well I finally killed a deer with something other than my bow! This was my first year of the dedicated hunter program and my first year of not hunting strictly with my bow. So it was pretty exciting to be able to try the muzzleloader hunt. It had been a couple of years since I had brought home a deer so I was wanting to fill the freezer with some meat and jerky. We had hunted hard during the archery hunt and were not able to get in bow range of some of the bigger bucks we had been watching. So the muzzleloader hunt rolled around and my wife and I tried to get in range of the bigger bucks again. This time we were greeted by about 5 other hunters in our area that we had been hunting for the last 3 years with nobody ever being there. I had my wife setup to take a nice 180ish buck that was closing the distance fast at about 400yds when down below us in the basin one of the hunters shot at some smaller deer that we had watched bed down. That was enough to clear our buck out. up and over the mountain he went along with the other bucks never to be seen again in the couple of days we were there. So we tried our backup area, and I spotted a nice little 2 point about 100 yds away and plyed with the idea of shooting him but kept holding off saying I wanted to get something a little bigger since we are dedicated now. So we kept looking for an hour or so and had headed further up this little canyon. On our way back out I spotted that buck again and watched him for a while. That's when my 3 point got up from behind a sagebrush and that's when I decided he was big enough. So I got out and lined up on him at just over 100 yds and shot. I hit him a touch low on my first shot and ended up having to track him quite a ways with the help of my wife and a good buddy of mine and put a couple more shots in him to finally get him on the ground. It was a way fun hunt and now I get to be super picky for the next 2 years and get my big buck. Ended up going 20' wide and not my biggest buck to date but still some great memories in the field with my wife which means more to me than the size of the buck.
