First Time in San Juan Abajo
Hey everyone
First time hunter. My son and I just completed hunter safety two years ago. We have been out after duck and rabbits and drew out deer tags for the San Juan/Abajo unit. We also go elk cow tags for the east side of the unit.
I am not asking for anyone's secret spot, but I would like to know where to avoid. I am nervous about stumbling into private property or some other restricted areas down there. So, if anyone can tell me where to avoid I would appreciate it. We are going down this weekend to do some scouting for next weekend.
Thanks

Re: First Time in San Juan Abajo
We just got back. We stayed up on Abajo Mountain and saw a ton of does and fawns but no bucks. It looked like most of the area was open. We did hope one little fence but it had no signs on it. So, think we will be back next weekend.

Sounds like fun. I don't know much about that unit but I would try tracking down a surface use map from either the local BLM or Forest Service field office. It will show the public/private boundaries along with the roads and stuff. I try to acquire one any where I hunt.
It might not hurt to look a little higher in elevation that might help turn up some bucks.

Great to see you took the kids and have some to put in the freezer!
It ain't the size of the gun but the placement of the bullet.
