Hope I get the draw

Post by mustanggt » Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:40 am

I'm new here and am hoping for a draw in MT this fall. I've never hunt antelope so am looking to learn as much as possible before going. I'm working on the load now for my rifle which I posted in the reloading section. I've been reading posts here and learning. Is there any other places that would be good resources for information? I'm grateful for any help. Thank you.

Welcome!
There is a lot to be learned over at 24hourcampfire.com

The biggest thing is, you must first forget about most everything you ever saw on a hunting show or read in a hunting magazine. Antelope aren't that tough to get close to and shoot.
Late in the season it can get tough but still 400+ yard shots are the exception rather than the rule.

Thanks for that tip. I will practice to 400 but I want to get as close as possible. I owe it to the animal to make the surest killing shot on him.

If you practice and get your rifle zeroed out to 400+ yards ther is no reason why you couldn't kill one at that distance. Just takes lots of practice, a good scope, and confidence. Enjoy spending time shooting and hunting! MT is an awesome place!

What helped me alot on my lope hunt a few years ago was to shoot thru a chrono and see what your true ballistics are. It was very reassuring to have an actual chrono print out on the stock of my rifle for necessary field adjustment. It showed the drop and rise of my bullet I zerod in at peak height of my bullet Wich was 300 I believe drop was close to 3 inches per hundred yards past 300 to a certain yardage. those speed goats are a blast to hunt best of luck to you.

Thanks for the help. I ran my loads across a chrony so that will help me know. Any suggestions on a place that I could plug in my data to get the bullet drop at each yardage? I'm really looking forward to this. Hope I get it. [-o<

Nikons site has a pretty good free application on their site. Enter all your data and it gives you trajectory and if you have a nikon BDC scope it will even tell you where to hold the little circles at specific yardages. Good luck I put in for WY lopes and hope to get mine June 30th.

SRM, thanks for the link. That is pretty slick. I forgot I had a link to the Nikon site as I have a 4.5-14x40 coyote special on my 204.
