70 grn Sierra Blitzking vs prarie dogs

Post by Springville Shooter » Mon Aug 02, 2010 9:43 pm

Check these out. These dogs were taken by me and a buddy at around 100 yds with a 243 win loaded with Varget and topped with a 70grn Blitzking. Super accurate, good distance, and pretty devastating. MV is 3540 and my Cooper will keep them in 1/3" if I am a good hand. We ran into these guys while scouting, not too many, but some fat daddys. Taste like chicken too.-------SS

Very impressive. Our sage rats Have given up and gone down for this year. I did manage to smoke a rock chuck the other day with my 270 wsm and a 130 ballistic tip. Pretty much same results. Always good fun though.

Got a ballistic anomoly that I noticed when comparing .243 and .224 bullets in 55grn. Normally, when you compare bullets of the same weight in different calibers, the smaller of the two calibers will have the better coefficient due to the fact that the bullet is longer to make up the weight in smaller caliber. For example, a 150grn in 270 has a BC of .496 while the same 150grn in 308 is .435. This holds true with all of the calibers/bullets I've looked at except the 55grn bullets from .224 and .243. Here, the smaller .224 has a BC of .267 while the bigger .243 has a slightly better BC of .276. Don't understand it, but it's just another reason to love my .243 and 6mm for varmint shooting. Can't beat the 55 grainers at around 4000fps for mid range blow up action, and I love the 70grn Sierra BK bullet at about 3600 for medium to long range work on prarie dogs and coyotes.----------SS

Have you used Varmint Grenades? I wonder how they stack up to these.

I have never used them personally, but I have heard from guys who shoot alot of varmints that there is no other bullet like them when it comes to exploding critters and fragmenting on ground impact to reduce ricochets. Might have to order up a box in 243 and try them out.-----------SS
