Got a rifle for Christmas

Post by Springville Shooter » Sat Dec 25, 2010 3:43 pm

After 14 Christmas's with my wife, I woke up this morning with no idea that the long box in the corner was from my wife to me. Inside was a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Win mag. I gotta admit that I was shocked. Now I get to have fun working up a load or the new rifle and hopefully killing some pigs with it in California this spring. Already have plans to try a 165 Accubond load, a 180 Scirooco and TSX load, and a 200gr accubond load.--------------SS

And here I gave my .30-06 to my son-in-law and a .22 to my neice and nephew for Christmas.

I'm down two and you're up one, Congrats lol
It ain't the size of the gun but the placement of the bullet.

Went out this New Year morning and braved the 10 degree temps to finally shoot the new Weatherby rifle that I got for Christmas. Barrel break-in is a chore and I wanted to get it started as soon as possible. I didn't know what to expect from this rifle, I have worked on other Vanguards that all met Weatherby's guarantee and then some. The rifle came from Cabelas as a package with a 3-12 cabelas scope, talley rings and bases, and a hard plastic case. I bore-sighted the scope a few days ago in my kitchen looking into the back yard through the sliding glass door and must have done a pretty good job as the first shot printed 2" high and one inch to the left. With sight adjustments, the second shot was closer, and the third shot was a dead ringer. What happened next suprised me. I shot the next 7 shots cleaning the barrel after each shot and ended up with a nice round group where all shots stayed within .80 inch! This is way exciting for a budget rifle and a low-end scope. All I have to say is potential, potential, potential.

The load was a light one for break-in with 75grns of RL-22 behind a 165 Nosler BT for a MV of right at 3100.(at 10 degrees F) Recoil was suprisingly light for a 300win and I think I have a new friend!!!!------SS
