Favorite .300 WSM Load

Post by sneekeepete » Mon Dec 14, 2009 7:47 am

I have been working up loads for me and my wifes .300 WSM. So far I have this load that I took my elk and deer with this year.
Barnes 168 Gr. TTSX, Winchester Brass, 61 Gr. of Winchester 760 powder, With CCI Large Rifle Primer, and Seated standard specs.
I'm curious to see what others are shooting. Thanks....

I have had real good results with alliant powders RE19 and most recently RE17. My current pet load for 300wsm and 168 TSX's is 66 grain of RE17. win brass, cci primers. I can't find my chrony results but it was mid 3100 fps range in my Win Model 70. very accurate load in my rifle.

**as always start 10% lower and work up, and always verify load data through legitimate sources**

I'm shooting the 168gr Barnes TTSX over 61.0 grains of RL17 with a CCI 200 primer. Chony'd at 2904. I had been shooting 63.0 grains of RL17 with a Fed 215M primer, but was having pressure issues with the cases (stretching cases, flattening primers, and excessive contact of the case head to the bolt face) in my Rem. 700.

The currant load shoots well, and although a little slower than most, was enough to knock my elk down at 430 yds and the wife's elk down at 300 with one shot this year.

thehardway,

That's interesting I did tweek my load to 65 grain (just because I found it a little more accurate) of RE17 w/ 215m's and just chronographed the load average at 3098 fps. I am shooting a win model 70 and have not experienced any pressure signs. I am using the 168 tsx's

What did you chrony at 63? Nothing wrong with 2900 fps if everything is working well. Just goes to show you with two different rifles the different results you get. Looked like the only difference was your bullet was the tipped version other than rifle and grains.

63 grs got me an average of 3018fps. I don't think a tipped vs. non-tipped bullet should make a noticeable difference since the actual tip isn't in contact with the rifling. It has to do with the rifle chamber itself. You are right, just because a load works well in one rifle doesn't mean it will work fine in another, which is very important for people new to reloading to remember.

What made you switch to the cci primer?

It was just part of the process of me decreasing my powder charge. First I tried the CCI with the 63gr, but still had signs of pressure. So I worked my way down in the powder department until I didn't see excessive pressure. Then I tried various primers until I got decent velocity and tight groups, and the CCI 200 is what yielded the best results for me.
