Moved to colorado 1 y ago and am new to hunting anything but flat old indiana farm ground.

I applied for first season in area 24 and was denied, still thinking about buying an over the counter tag for the second season.

Anyone have any advice on the flat tops?

I guess you haven't been there yet. It's very rugged and high and it's hunted hard. Unless you are in great shape and like to backpack or have horses I'd find an easier area. I'd look over the leftover tags list which will come out on August 9th and find a 4th season tag in an area that's lower. It'll be snowing by then and the elk should be herding up and moving lower. There's lots less pressure then too.

Do your own thing... but do it... moved here 8 years ago and have several elk to show for it. You have to learn, put in the miles and research and spend time out there.

There are left over tags ( Bull) for the first season right now. I'll be there on a drop camp.
