Gunnison Elk Hunt, gmu 55

Post by infldr3 » Thu Aug 18, 2011 8:50 am

Once again came up empty. We hunted second season gmu 55, in 2010. Saw some elk above timberline late in the evening, but still no luck. Did anyone else out there have the same luck, or did you bag a nice one? We hunted lost canyon..... No sign. We hunted in Taylor park and saw 15 above timberline. I know secert spots should be secret, but if you have some tips where you have seen more then 15 elk, please help?

So for the past 5 years I have hunted are 55 (2nd season) and have not killed a elk. We have had great luck killing big bucks, but the elk have been a big pain in the hind end. We hunt lost canyon, taylor park, and the double top mountain area. My question is has anyone had any luck killing elk in this area? I know its not proper to ask another hunter where do they typically see elk in this area, but I now resorting to this because I cant find them. So, where do you professional elk killing machines typically find and kill elk in area 55? If you shot one last year, during 2nd season, where the heck did you find them?

I'm just coming out and asking, because I'm tired of being skunked!!

Cheers,

Wish I could help but I don't know the area. Sounds like you've put in some time in that unit. Here's a bump to the top of the page. Hopefully someone else will have some info.

I camp @ 9500 ft. The elk I hunt are up in the high Alpine Forrest and feed above timberline until pushed to dark timber 2nd season. Pressure is usually gone after day 3.

For the record. 117 bulls, 38 cows, and 6 calves were killed last year in 55 for 2nd season. It had 1037 hunters for a lousy 16% success rate for last year, and a 14% average success rate for the last 5 years. It's actually much worse than that, because those numbers don't count the OTC hunters. Which could be another 1000 hunters

It's not a good choice for an elk hunt.

Check out unit 54. I have hunted there in the past and have had great success. I'm not sure if there are any tags left for second season as they have a cap on them. I haven't been in that unit for about 5 years, but the last time we were there our group filled 6 of 8 tags, 4 bulls.
