La Sal Utah Unit

Post by buglinarcher » Fri May 01, 2009 9:01 pm

The utah game and fish say I was rewarded with an early season archery tag. Has anyone hunted this unit for elk? Can you give me any tips as to where to start?

Welcome to the site.

I personaly do not know anything about the unit, but I am sure that if you put in the time you will find a good bull. I'm sure that someone on the site will be able to help you out with at least a little info.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I would hunt just north of the town named la sal. The terrain goes from sage to pines. alot of roads and access.

Thank you for the tip. One of the reasons I put in for this unit even though I am unfamiliar with the unit is it is early season and I can take my 11 year old daughter with me. I have been fortunate the last three years to have her with us when we have called in and killed a bull.

I am advised we are in a small group hunting in the La Sal area last week of September 2009. Being the senior member of our small group, I was wondering about the terrain and the elevation, to see if I could hang in with my sons and their friends in the high country.
Lost 30# at Weight Watchers, and get some moderate to strenuous excercise fairly regularly.
All advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

Lets see some pictures of the bulls that you have gotten in the last three years.

Bear2 - There is a little bit of everything there. You can hunt steep high mountain areas, but I have also seen a lot of elk in the lower foothill elevations. You will do just fine finding and hunting elk that aren't straight up the mountain if you do your homework and scout a bit.
Good luck and happy hunting.
