A Good Opening Morning Blacktail

Post by Tyewire » Sun Nov 20, 2011 3:28 pm

Well I climbed up in my tree early Saturday morning in hopes that a blacktail would wander my direction. About 8 a.m. a doe with no buck in tow. So at 9 a.m. I decided to give rattling a try and with in minutes I had a buck coming my direction. He stopped in the littlest of windows from my stand I drew and shot. He jumped and ran to my left and out of sight. It looked like he was having trouble with one leg on the opposite side. So I was sure I hit him, or did I?

A minute went buy and in the same location my deer just ran steps out a four point buck. Was this my buck I just shot at? Did I miss him clean and now he was coming back? I never study the antlers of a deer before I shot. I just knew he was a shooter and a four point. So I knocked another arrow as this buck walk directly in front of my stand. Was this my deer? I keep playing the shot back in my head and what I saw. I knew that deer I shot at had acted hit. Don't shoot I keep telling myself =; . The buck continued to circle my stand area for a half hour giving me a hundred ways to shoot him. Then to my left again another deer appeared. A forked horn.

After a half hour of these two buck under my stand they finally wandered off. I was either going to be the butt of my buddies jokes because I just let a four point blacktail walk after a second shot opportunity or I had called in 3 bucks and mine was laying dead where I saw him last.. :-k

I happy to say it was the better of the two endings.

Big time congrats on the restraint you showed in not pulling back on the second buck, not knowing for sure! :not-worthy

And what a great blacktail 10sign:
