.270 pump action for mule deer?

Post by MrJones » Mon Jul 12, 2010 3:23 pm

I am new to hunting and just got a .270 Remington pump action rifle, model 7600 and wondering what y'alls thoughts are about if is it sufficient to hunt Mule Deep with.

Any insight or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Welcome to Muley Madness MrJones.
For sure the 270 is a good Mule Deer rifle, be it a pump, bolt or otherwise.
There are some very knowledgeable rifle people on MM. Maybe some will advise.
I zero mine at 220 yards using Federal Premium 130 grain. One shot to the boiler room just behind the shoulder. :thumb

Mr Jones,

You are equipped with an excellent Mule deer rifle. Shoot it a lot and hone your skills.

My Remington Gamemaster pump chambered in .270 Winchester is my go to rifle for just about everything I hunt. I shoot handloads myself, 130 grain Hornady hollow points with 57 grains of Hodgdon 4831 for mulies. Not sure what she chrono's at with that load but it does the trick.

Great caliber for Mule deer no matter what action configuration it is. Shoot alot and get very well aquainted with it and it'll make you proud!

I went to Colorado from Vermont where there were lots of pump guns. I shot my first muley at about 300 yards with 30-06 Remington 7600 with a receiver sight and a day later killed a running elk at 125 yards with it. It should work in 270 if you use a premium bullet and stick it in the right place.

I agree that you have a first-class mule deer rifle on your hands. My advise to you as a new hunter is to put a medium to low power scope on your rifle and then sight it in for dead-on at 100yds. Then, shoot as many rounds as you can afford from every position. You will shoot many more quicker shots at short range than you will long shots at distant deer. And remember to have fun, pump actions are a blast to shoot!

nothing wrong with the caliber or gun, get out and shoot form all the different shooting positions, brench rest is good for sighting in, but I have never see a shooting bench at 8000ft on the side of a hill. get in shape there is not that much O2 at the higher elevations.

best of luck

Wow thanks! This is great to hear and the advice y'all offered is fantastic.

I don't have any friends or family that hunt so I'm on my own in the learning, although fortunately I worked for a spell with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and as a result learned how to field dress a deer and got a fair amount of practice. Now comes everything else...ha!

Anyway thanks for the confidence! I'm heading out for the first time to get used to the rifle this weekend!

The remington pump is a great gun that is very accurate. My wife shot lots of antelope and deer with hers. Just be sure not to over oil it in dusty conditions or it might jam.
