Slug gun for deer.....

Post by C_Carr316 » Sun Dec 12, 2010 1:51 pm

Where I live in PA - have to use a slug gun. Looking for suggestions on make/model, avg shots are 50-60 yds, but some spots could be 125 yds.

Any info? christophercarr316@yahoo.com

I'm sure its not what you are looking to hear but, I have killed two mule deer with just my smooth bore fixed choke model 12. I used rifled slugs at 60 an 80 yards. It worked like a dandy!
So if you didn't want to buy a gun just for that. Dig out your old shotgun. It was alot of fun!

My mossberg Mavrik 85 dhotgun has an extra rifled barrel that I purchased. I can hit the bullseye at 125 yards using a sabot type rifled slug. Its plenty of round for mule deer and elk out to that range.

I have the Winchester Super X3 Cantilever 12 Ga. With the 22” rifled barrel it is accurate easily passed 100 yards

I believe Savage makes a bolt action slug gun and from the reviews I've read its a legit 200yd slugger with the new ballistic tip slugs from Hornady and Remington. They are talking 1" to 1 1/2" groups at 100yds. May be worth a look for a dedicated slug man.

Guys,

I've had 7 or 8 slug guns over the years some good and some not so good. I can tell you without hesitation that a 20 gauge is plenty of power out to 200 yds and personally i feel is the way to go. The new 3" ammo is amazing and has tons of power. I have taken multiple deer and the results are awesome. I'm not saying that a 12 gauge is out of the question but ive found there typically not as accurate at longer ranges. The gun i currently use and is the most accurate and best feeling of all i've tested is the newer Savage 220F slug gun. It consistently shoots under 1 1/2" at a hundred yards with the correct ammo. It also comes with the famous accutrigger that is great. My setup includes a Leupold VX2 3-7x33 scope and DNZ low 1 piece mounts. Scope sits nice and low and the mounts are super rigid.

If your dead set on a 12 gauge then i would look at the new reintroduced Browning A-Bolt slugger. Its a great gun too. Good luck with your choice.

I killed two deer with my 870 Wingmaster with slugs just using the bead. After some practice, I could hit a milk jug at 100 yds every time. My shots on deer were 40 yards and 70 yards. I have always wanted a good slug gun as my wife's family has a farm in New York and I would like to go hunt deer with them someday. Let us know what you end up with, the Savage is interesting. Also good insight on the 20ga, I would have never thought of it as a superior slugger. -----------SS

I think you'd be fine with just practicing with rifled slugs.... It's always fun to get a new rifle or shotgun though. I've heard good things about the A Bolt slug gun.
