I currently shoot a .54 cal Traditions Deerhunter percussion cap and would like some advice on different loads. My first question - would you shoot roundballs or conicals? I read somewhere that roundballs are more accurate etc. My second question - what loads would you use for each of these projectiles? Are the loads supposed to be lower (grains) with conicals than roundballs?
I currently use the T/C maxi-hunter, with a 100 gr. of pyrodex. At 50 yards I am dead on, at 75 yards I aimed about 5" high and was about 2 1/2" high from dead center. Started to rain, so I didn't get to go out to 100 yards.
I am going to be hunting mule deer this year in SE NM, which is like W TX...flat. I assume my shots are going to be 100yrds or more.
Your thoughts opinions are appreciated.
