Friends Henry muzzleloader buck.

Post by a_bow_nut » Sat Oct 02, 2010 4:20 pm

Got back from my friends hunt on the Henry Mountains.

Oh man what an awesome time. It started with Gary and his long time hunting buddy heading down on Sunday to set up camp and start scouting. By the time that I showed up on Tuesday They had a couple of nice bucks picked out.

It's amazing how nice and helpful alot of the people down there with what they had seen and where to find even more nice bucks.

On opening morning I found myself off following up on some back up bucks incase the one that he was hunting didn't work out. after not finding the buck that I was looking for and watching the rest of the deer bed down for the day I decided to go see how they were doing. When I get there I find then all sitting on their fourwheelers glassing the draw that they had been hunting in that morning. He had made his way to within 187 yards but only had the deers hind end to shoot at so they backed out and let the bucks bed for the day and they were trying to find them when I got there. After about an hour of glassing we had found the four bucks that were beded in that draw and had a game plan for the afternoon hunt.

Fast forward to that afternoon and we are just getting ready to move in when one of the nephews comes zooming back to say that he had found another buck that we should look at before heading in for this one. As it turned out this wasn't a buck that was worth pursuing and by the time we made it back it was to late to start a stalk.

Thursday morning at the crack of dawn we were heading out to go back after the buck from the day before. As I was making my way overI noticed a couple of nice bucks feeding over a ridge so I stopped and hiked up to the ridge to get a better look. As it turns out thses bucks were not quite as nice as I had thought so as I'm getting ready to head back to the fourwheeler I hear on the radio that it's time to get the cameras. I race over and get there just in time to help clean the buck and pack it out.

He ended up harvesting the buck at 130 yards and then the high fives and the picture taking started.

Well if you ever get a chance take a camping trip down there just before the archery season opens and you will be amazed at the numbers and the size of some of those bucks. I've always heard about it but it's one of those things that you just have to see in person. It's to bad more of the state isn't this way.
