Elk hunting with M.L. ???

Post by UtahRob » Thu Mar 30, 2006 2:59 pm

My son Cody and I are going to hunt Elk for our first time here in N.Utah this year.We will be using a 300 grn XTP and 100 grns of ffg pyrodex.
I shoot a Tradition pro with a 28'' barrel I get 1'' - 1 1/2'' groups at 100 yrds and my son Cody shoots a CVA Optima with a 26'' barrel and gets 3'' groups at 100 yrds. What would your recommend as the longest distance you should shoot a elk with the loads we are shooting? We plan on doing a lot of practice out to around 150 yrds . The plan is to stay within 100 yrds if we can !!

Thank you for any Info-
Rob and Cody

100 grains pushing a 300 gram bullet, I wouldn't go further than 100 yards. You can definitely lob it out further with some accuracy but you will lose FPS and energy very, very quickly. Do a search on the web for bullet velocities and you should be able to find out the max range for what you are shooting. You can also find the recommend energy required for penetration on big game.
It ain't the size of the gun but the placement of the bullet.
