1st Moose shed & some whitetails
1st Moose shed & some whitetails
The snow finally left about the first week in May, so we had about three decent weekends before the green up and the woodtick explosion....
Had a great time finding these and a few more...I took ATLs of all of them and now at work I have a slide show of them as a background on my desktop...Now it is fun to re-live each find every once in a while....

Nice, some pnenomenal 8's in that area. I probably shot a half dozen nice 8's before I finally got a nice 10 this last year. I just spent a few weeks working in northern Minn. near Duluth. Is that anywhere close to you? -----SS

We are about 75 miles NW of Duluth, with family in and around Duluth we are there frequently... What project were you working on (if I may ask)?
The sheds from the big 8 tallied about 135 inches...huge for public land this far north.....Several years back I picked up a matched 10 set that measured up at 142 and some change....Add spread to either set and as far as northern MN deer go they are very nice....
Here is a couple more pics...

Here is the 10 from 2011...and a right from the same buck found in 2009....not pictured is a left from 2010 found later in 2011.....the 09 right was around 55"....the 2010 left was over 63 and the 2011 set was 69 and 73 if I remember correctly....The 2010-11 winter was especially hard and I believe he did not make it through after he dropped...Never saw sign of him again...

Randy,
I was working on a joint project between the Railroad and a communications company to expand fiber optic networks in the area. I can't get alot more specific than that on a public forum, but basically it has to do with the race for more network speed both wired and wireless.
Those are some great sheds that you have been finding. Do you get a chance to hunt in these areas as well? I would love to see some hunting pics of these northern whitetails. ----SS

SS,
We have hunted some of the area of these big boys but not all that we would like because even though it is public land there are other groups that traditionally hunt there...I would not care to step on anyone's toes any more than have them step on mine...
We do however manage to usually find a good one or two to add to our bag as we hunt both Northern MN & WI...
Here are a few pics I found of the last few years I really loved digging through these old pics sure brings back some great memories.

Randy

Re: 1st Moose shed & some whitetails
Great bucks! I love those big bodied northrn bucks. My current boss bought a small farm in Wisconsin that will occupy his time when he retires in a couple years. I plan on a few hunts with him starting next year. I started hunting whitetails in Idaho years ago and seldom miss a year. I have a lot of respect for these deer and look forward to hunting them in many places around the country.
When I was in Duluth, I took a drive up the north shore and saw a buck hit on the freeway that had a body that rivaled the biggest mule deer that I have seen. His bases were as thick as your wrist and he was well on his way to a tall set of guards and nice main beams with several points. What a shame to loose him, but by the sheer numbers of deer that I saw up there, I'm sure there are many more like him.
Take care and thanks for sharing the pics.-----SS
