Big Skull find great day for sheds

Post by huntenfever » Sun Mar 09, 2008 1:34 am

Wow it's hard to explain the day we had today. Right out of the gate my buddy Scott found a nice 4X4 set. We must have took 3-4 different hikes finding some good bone in most of our spots. Then right at dark after trying to decide if we should hit it again Scott walked right onto a HUGE 191.5 skull. Wow is all i can say what a day hope you enjoy.

NO we were not in Utah. You can't take those in Utah. Although i have herd if you call the game warden in Utah and tell him where you found it if they investigate and find no foul play I have herd they will let you keep it. Of course all this is what i have herd.

Great finds guys, That skull will look great after a bit of cleaning. He's a dandy

Jersey Boy-
Ive done a bit of experimenting with this.
These ways have worked the best for me.
Ive burried them the ground up to the antler pedicle for a month and most of the hair and flesh will come off, take a sharp knife and peel the rest back. ( A bit stinky in the summer)
I have also put them in a pond to soak until the flesh is soft and use a sharp knife to cut it away.
Boiled the skull in water until it started to fall off.
I have also heard about beatles you can buy to eat it away. I m going to to this method next time..
Hope this helps.

It is told locally that leaving your shed out over an ant hill cleans it up very well. I haven't tried this, but was warned to chain & stake it down to prevent predators and other shed hunters alike from taking off with them.

I'll be trying this myself come the warmer months as I tried boiling my skull which cleared everything off very well, however, my pot wasn't big enough to get all the stuff between the antlers off.

Wouldnt be saying that on here. You can get in deep doo doo if you take a skull home without having a dwr i believe officer "investigate" and they MIGHT let you keep it if they discover it wasnt poached or something. its on page 46 in the big game proc. ill copy it down here.

"Finding a skull with antlers or horns attached"

"If you find a skull with the antlers or horns still attached,it's possible the animal was poached.
Do NOT pick up or move the skull. Instead,we encourage you to do the following:

.take photos of the skull from a couple of angles;

.pinpoint the location of the skull(preferably its GPS coordinates);

.call or visit a Division office to report your find;and

.provide key details in your report.

The Division will send a conservation officer to investigate and determind if the animal was poached. If it's clear that the animal was not poached, We may allow you to keep your find."

Ya i know its lame. They should get rid of this law but until then i would be quite about your skull finds :-$
