Turkey Tactics

Post by sawsman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 3:21 pm

I'm getting pretty excited for the upcoming hunt. I went a bought a couple of calls today in preparation. Got a nice box call and a diaphram call. I also picked up some Hevi-Shot Magnum Blend loads for the 12 gauge.

Now I just need to make it happen.

Any turkey hunting tips for a first timer?

I never really invested in any special shells I always use the same ones I use on pheasant hunting. I have never neaded more than one shot. just let them come in to your effective shot range that is key patterning your gun before hand so you know you can shoot at 30 yards but not 34. you would be suprised where your effective range is and isn't in a short distance. Also I find my birds by scouting first. birds are down hill of where they will want to be at noon so find the transition point and set up.

Lots of Turkey on the Boulder. go out at night and owl call so you can locate the roost. then set up by that. the roost is usually the biggest tree in a valley halfway between the bottom of a hill and the top.

I'm gonna see what I can learn at the UWC youth turkey camp this year, I know there will be some pro's there giving out lessons! =D> Need all the help I can get!
