Lever Lovers
Hey Guys,
After 4 trips out west hunting elk and muley's I'm inclined to get me a lever gun for the timbered areas I tend to hunt. I've shot a model 94 in 7-30 waters for years for eastern whitetails and I'm quite comfortable shooting deer with my Lyman receiver sight. This rifle has taken 22 deer since 1985. My thoughts are to get a Marlin 444 and rig it up with same sight set up. I would prefer a Browning 71 in 348, but they are too expensive for me to afford. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Wyatt

Re: Lever Lovers
I've carried a Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 off and on for a couple of years now and love it, I've never put a scope on it but I may start reloading for it so a new scope may show up in the near future. Of 20+ elk only a couple have been shot at over 100 yrds anyhow.
I know my spellings bad!
Re: Lever Lovers
Leverguns are about the only rifles that are designed to be shot with iron sights anymore. I love a receiver sight setup on one for shots at closer ranges. If you are a reloader look at having a Marlin 444 rebarreled to 375 JDJ. It's a 444 case necked to 375 and gives a pretty flat trajectory and keeps it's velocity and energy much further than the 444. If you can find a used 444 Marlin, which I haven't been able to find a reasonably priced one, this project would be fairly inexpensive and fun.

I love lever action guns. The only thing is i dont have any big caliber ones. I have a Winchester .22 and a Henry Golden Boy .22 and also a Henry Golden Boy .17 HMR, my dad has an older Winchester .30/30 ive shot a frew times but not much. I never really got into it, the blackpowder is more my thing

Re: Lever Lovers
Keep the 7-30 and load some premium 140 BTSP bullets in it and stuff it full of powder. Most guys who want to hunt the west here ALREADY have the rifle they need.

If you reload or willing to get into it.
Hornady has finally mader leverultion pointed flex tips available to the public for reloading.
The ballistics with these new bullets make those big lever guns a lot more deadly and add more range to your shot distance.
