questions about .17 cal.

Post by killerbee » Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:55 am

just to pick someones brain: none of my books include rimfire guns so im having a bit of trouble finding info on the 17 HMR and the 17 Mach2 and the 17 HRM . so here are my questions. how fast does each of the 3 shoot? i know the mach 2 is just a 22long rifle necked down to 17 cal. i'm wanting to convert my ruger 10-22. it's a very easy convertion everything is the same except the barrel. but i see you can by the CCI velocitor 40gr that are shooting 1435 fps. do i gain anything worth-wile by doing the convertion? the bullets will cost more so if i just by a more expencive 22 cartridge are they close?

next question: is there a difference between the 17 HMR and the 17 HRM??
the only reason i ask - my dad is a FFL dealer and in his catalog [that i always steal for the first week he gets it] there are guns listed as 17HMR and 17 HRM [hornady rimfire magnum]

i have 3 ruger 10-22's so i think it would be cool to convert 1 to a 17 mach2 but i also dont care to just give money away and not gain anything in return just to say it's a 17mach2?

what ya think?

The .17 HMR and the .17 HRM are the exact same.

Introduced in 2002, the performance is not unlike the wildcat centerfires based on the .22 Hornet case. The ballistic performance is good.

The two other .17 cal rimfires are the .17 PMC-.17 Aguila and the .17 Mach 2.

The Aguila is based on the standard length .22 LR case. With a 20 grain jacketed bullet at or in the excess of 1800 fps, it provides a flat shooting, light-varmint capability out to at least 100 yrds. It can be adapted to conversions of Ruger's 10-22 with nothing more than a barrel switch.

Velocities are as follows:

.17 PMC-.17 Aguila= 1850 fps.(muzzle)
.17 Mach 2= 2100 fps
.17 HMR= 2550 fps

The 10-22 will tend to have a heavier bullet and less velocity.

It all comes down to what you really want. I have a Marlin .17HMR and love it. Very accurate little round.

exactly the info i was looking for!! thanks SAWSMAN!
so just to make sure i follow[ i realize 100% that MY info might be off]
i thought it was the MACH2 that was the simple convertion of just a barrel, same clip and everthing else. but it's the 17 AGUILA? and how hard would those bullets be to get? once again, spot on what i was looking for, i appriciate it!

No problem.

Hornady followed their .17 HMR with the Mach 2. This is another rimfire based on the .22 LR case (well sort of). This round seems to be based on the Stinger case, which is slightly longer than the regular .22 LR. Overall length is the same as for the .22 LR ammo so gun conversion problems are somewhat minimized. Not all blowback-style .22 semi-auto rifles can be converted to this cartridge without altering the bolt or mainspring along with a new barrel. That's not surprising since this round is somewhat more energetic than the .17 Aquila. I found this article interesting.

Mach 2 is an easy conversion, you need a 22 mag 10/22 for the hmr,if you want the accurate data for these conversions go to rimefirecentral.com,its all there.

U can probably pic up a kit in their classifieds section, the mach2 conversion is fairly cheap, but the ammo isnt and I would be suprised to see it much harder to find in the near future since the HMR has way better performance and the ammo is cheaper.Id save the $ and buy a 17 HMR,i love my CZ,most accurate rimfire Ive ever owned.

I own a Marlin .17 and have been in love since the first shot. I think I would spend the money and just buy one also. You cannot go wrong. Made bunny hunting EVEN MORE fun with it(and a ballistic tip!!) I use a mil dot scope on it just to take advantage of the extra reach this gun has....you know let them run out to a 100 yards and think they got away...then boom! :))
