Black Hills bighorn sheep

Post by WinMag » Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:18 pm

I am new to this site but know how everyone likes pictures. So I thought I'd add my big horn sheep I took in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He is an 11 1/2 yr old ram.

You pick up quick, we all definitely love pictures. I'm sure that was an amazing hunt! I can't wait for the day I draw my Bighorn tag. If you get a chance write up a little story of the hunt.
And keep the pictures rollin'!

There's not allot to say about this hunt. The hardest part of course was drawing the once in a life time tag. I was very lucky there and drew it after only 6yrs of applying. The hunt was DIY and since the Black Hills are very accessible I stayed in a camper and drove to different hunt locations. Not really roughing it at all. I shot him on the third day, I had seen larger rams but they were staying on private ground. SD has some big rams. I had to make a quick decision as I caught him and 4 other rams out in the open at 150yds. I thought he was larger than he was but one shot from the 300 win mag put him down in his tracks. He must have been an ornery old ram, he completely broomed off his entire first years growth and had broken his nose smashing it in. I'm trying to draw another sheep tag in CO & MT so I can do it again.

I took him just North East of Hill City, between Five Points and Sheridan Lake.
