Condition of your Firearm?

Post by tapehoser » Thu Dec 13, 2012 2:29 pm

Just wondering the conditions we carry in when we're in the field hunting big game. Feel free to share the why's and why-not's below.
Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket???

Generally cartridges in the magazine, but nothing in the chamber. I like to chamber a round if I'm following fresh tracks, about to pop over a rolling hill, or things like that, but then once the situation dies down & I feel like it's less likely that I would unexpectedly pop up on something I'd clear my chamber and put the round back in the magazine. So my vote goes for "Cartridges in the magazine, but nothing in the chamber".

Depends, but one in chamber with safety on usually. Sometimes not one in chamber, safety on.

I usually have one chambered with the safety on of course. The stuff I hunt is pretty thick and that extra split second can make the difference.

Pretty sure this topic was covered a few years back in great detail with pros and cons on all sides.

That being said, always a round in the chamber with the safety on.
It ain't the size of the gun but the placement of the bullet.

For me it depends on the weapon I’m carrying. I carry my Glock in C-3 for the same reason you do, but I carry my Bersa 380CC in C-1 mode simply because it is a “DA” (first shot) pistol, so I see it as no different than carrying a loaded revolver.
