Flying with a rifle?

Post by sneekeepete » Mon Oct 06, 2008 10:29 am

Hey guys I have a question for you... I am flying home on Friday and will taking my hunting rifle with me of course. I have never brought a rifle with me. So my question is how difficult is it to get on the plane and does it cost extra money to get it on the plane?

Sneekeepete,
Flying with a rifle is realy no big deal.
The rifle must be in a hard sided case (unloaded of course).
The case must be lockable.
At the ticket counter you will have to open it, let them see its not loaded, then they will insert a postcard that says it's not loaded.
They will then have a TSA agent come to the counter and bring you and the case to an xray machine where they give it the quick once over.
That is usually all it takes.
There is no additional fee, it just counts as a piece of luggage.
All airlines have their policies on their websites, make sure you check them.
I hope this helps.

In addition make sure you have no ammo whatsoever. Also, bring a lock or locks for the hard sided case once the inspection part is over. When you get to your destination, don't plan on finding your case in baggage claim with all the other luggage. Usually, they will pull it off to the side to a secure area where you will need to show your baggage claim receipt.

I found out the last part the hard way and was going nuts thinking someone had stolen my rifle and went to make a claim and found it sitting there safe and sound.
It ain't the size of the gun but the placement of the bullet.
