Re: Sweet Buck - Muzzleloader 200 6/8"
Timberbuck, how did your Paunsaugunt hunt turn out last fall? I remember following the discussion about where you were going to hunt. I'm in line for that tag in the next year or two and am curious what you found. I assume you were hunting on top. I was down there with a buddy during the archery hun...

Re: 3 Point or Better Units
I believe the 3 point restrictions actually did work. Those were different times however. The Henry's and Book Cliffs were vast areas of mostly roadless terrain, miles from civilization over very bad roads. Few people hunted there. The herds could take the pressure being put on only the mature bucks...

Re: Gear List
I make sure to bring plenty of supplies for meat care. Several large plastic bags or a small tarp, cloth or plastic bags to carry meat in, nitrile gloves, good long knife and sharpener. I also carry a container of black pepper if its a time of year when flies will be a problem - this keeps them off ...

Re: Barnes Bullet Weight Questions
Anything from 130-150 would be a good weight for a .277 deer bullet. I'd sight in 2" high at 100 yards and then enter your data into one of the many online ballistic calculators. With that gun you should be able to hold right on out to 250 or more.

Re: Advice for Northeastern Utah Buck Mule Deer
If I have to hike a ways to beat the crowds I have no problem with that This is the key to getting a nice buck. All of the areas you described have deer, so pick an area that you will be able to visit a few times before the hunt. Find a good vantage point and glass a lot. Bucks will move around and...

*Blackhorn 209 prohibited in Utah*
Just a heads up for all the ML guys on here. This has been a subject of some debate since word got out that Blackhorn 209 is a nitrocellulose based powder. People who have called the DWR to find out if its legal have been told that it is not. From Sgt. Stacey Jones, "Blackhorn 209 is a nitrocellulos...

Re: Does anyone know...
I don't "know", but I can venture a pretty good guess. I've used traditional muzzleloaders a fair amount with black powder and pyrodex, round ball and conicals. The powder charge isn't very different from what you'd use with an inline. For .50 cal rifles you'd use anywhere from 60-100 grains of powd...

Re: 3 point Boone and Crockett typical?
Thanks for the compliments everyone, I was fortunate to get such a deer on a general hunt. And Packout, I could not be happier with your taxidermy work. It is truly amazing. And I cannot even tell where the .355" diameter 3rd nostril used to be. The fix looks perfect! You should not allow your broth...
