New Mexico Unit 37 Lincoln National Forest

Post by crankbait321 » Tue Jun 21, 2011 2:20 pm

My buddy and I were fortunate enough to draw a New Mexico Mule Deer rifle tag for Nov 19-23 of this year for Unit 37 near Capitan and Lincoln National Forest. We have never been to that area and plan on putting in several days of scouting before the season opens. Is anyone familiar with that area that might be able to help point us in a general direction and help us with pointers for that area? Thanks!

MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A BULLET PROOF VEST. WHITE OAK, AND JACKS PEAK AREA WAS REAL GOOD BUT GOT A LOT OF LION IN THERE NOT TO MANY DEER LEFT. TRY THE CAPITAN GAP AREA.

Follow up:

For those of you looking for some info on Unit 37 in the future....We hunted Nov. 19-23. It was a good hunt. Lots of people on the unit but not too bad if you got off the beaten path. We did an overnight pack trip and had it to ourselves. We saw plenty of deer and had opportunities at several shooters but just not any big deer so neither one of us shot a deer. We hunted Corizozo Mtn and started high up near the Radio tower and hunted low all the way to the flats. Most of the deer sign started at the 7500' mark all the way to the flats. Saw several nice elk on the hunt too. Water was the key since it was so dry. My suggestion would be now that we have been would be dry years hunt around water that is located on any of the maps you buy. I'm sure there are some very nice deer on the unit we just never figured out where they were located. We did not see any bucks with does yet either. I did notice a ton of hunters around the Capitan Gap area but we stayed farther west just to have a little less people to deal with. Corizozo had about 15 hunters camped that we saw which was not too crowded. Good luck to you guys in the future!

I agree. Nice to actually hear how a hunt went that someone was asking advice for. Thanks for the hunt recap.
