Anybody else stain horns?
Anybody else stain horns?
I got into this a couple months ago, so far I've done about 10-15 horns, I am starting to get pretty good at it. All of these horns were at one point either hard white or chalk white, the last elk horn is one that I pulled out of the yard that had been sitting in the sun for about 4 years. If there is anyone else who stains horns please post some picture's I'd like to see them. Let me know what you guy's think.

Re: Anybody else stain horns?
I'll be doing some hopefully sooner than later, whats your secret?
Re: Anybody else stain horns?
I sand them down with I think 80 grain sand paper and I have some horn stain from Van Dykes taxidermy. I go about 5 to 1 with stain and water (5 stain to 1 water). I dip a rag into the stain and apply it to the horn very lightly until I get the color that I am looking for.

Here are a couple of pictures of a two point that I stipped the velvet off of and stained up.

Those look real good. I actually just starting getting into this... I had an old Whitetail set that was a little mangled so I had a friend in Utah recreate what was messed up. When I got them back I just had to add my touch starting with epoxy to mold different shapes and scrapes. I've been using water based Burnt Umber and Walnut stain. I'll post pictures when the set is complete hopefully it will be hard to find what was added.

Here's the Whitetail set that was repaired and I added my staining touch. Can anyone tell what was fixed? I'm hoping not.

Those look pretty awesome... I've got a few sets that I inherited from a grandpa and I'd like to get them looking nice again. They spent quite a few years in his attic and are pretty bleached. It's cool to see that this works pretty well!
Re: Anybody else stain horns?
If you need any paint or stain help let me know I tried oil and water based paint also stain topped them off with a matte finish spray paint.

I'll hit you up for sure when I get around to staining them! I only have a week left in summer school and I should have a bit more time on my hands then. Thanks!Mularcher wrote:If you need any paint or stain help let me know I tried oil and water based paint also stain topped them off with a matte finish spray paint.
