When is/was the rut this year? 2010 (Pics Inside!)

Post by sewing » Tue Oct 05, 2010 8:51 am

There have been two really cold days this fall in Northern Utah. Every elk hunter and guide I talk to say the elk have not really rutted yet. What do you think?

This morning I saw four bulls together with a group of cows. I'm hoping the warm weather delayed the rut and I'm hoping it will be in full swing on the elk opener now that the weather is cooling a bit.

What think ye?

Bad pics, but here they are. A 6x6 and a 5x5. Also had a raghorn and a 2 point with them.

I only had one day two weeks ago where I ran into a bugling bull. He was running a ridge top tearing trees up. Things have been pretty quiet since. I hope this Utah weather change will turn things up. Fingers crossed!

In the years that I have elk hunted I would argue that the rut is the same time every single year, the only thing that I would say ever changes is how vocal the elk get. You can bet that most of the cows have already been bred this year.

Just my two cents.

I just finished up helping friends and family on their Muzzy tags. The elk were rutting the entire time two weeks I was on the mountain. They were just very tight lipped. I saw four bulls over 320 and one well over 350 that had their harems. I also saw a little raghorn 4x4 that had two cows hidden all to himself. lol Anywho I think the rut happens the same time every year too.

Oh I also saw two spikes that bedded on the same mountain face every evening and another heard with 11 spikes and no bull in it!
