Re: muley tracks?
Generally a buck will have the front of the hooves spread, as well as leave dew claw marks in the rear, and I've seen it even from smaller bucks. The bigger the buck, the further back his dew claws are and the more pronounced the mark from them. Does' hooves usually come more to a point in front.

Re: Unit 711 and 71 in Colorado
How did this hunt go? I'm thinking of trying these units for the bow hunts next year. I live in NM and haven't drawn an elk tag in 6 years. Starting to get a little pissed off about that. If I read it correctly, 71 and 711 have either sex deer tags if you can draw it and over the counter either sex...

Re: Passing on the shot
The definition of a "shooter" is always changing for me. Personally I would like to take a mature deer, and leave the smaller ones to get bigger. As the hunt goes on the I'll sometimes shoot a smaller deer, but it depends on if we have other deer in camp as well. It's not only about the meat in the ...

Congrats, that is a great looking buck! Sounds like you hunted hard and I'm glad you had better luck this year.

Re: Unit 711 and 71 in Colorado
Cool deal! Maybe we'll run into one another up there. Sorry to hear about the Texas folk up there. Not everyone is like that I assure you. A lot of Texans, though, are used to hunting private land. 97% of the state is private land so they get used to screwing up their own hunting rather than someon...

Re: Unit 711 and 71 in Colorado
I'm coming into this thread a little late, but my family has been hunting 71/711 for 40+ years. There are good years and bad years, but we've taken a few nice deer out of there, as well as elk up a little higher. You will draw for 3rd season with 3 points for sure, usually it only takes 1 or 2 point...

Re: CO unit 74 2nd rifle?
Like I said, it all depends on the weather. I've been there second season where its warm and dry, and they haven't even started to move down. We had to go over 10k before we even started seeing sign. Obviously there are areas lower that hold deer year round, but the bigger deer will be holding high ...

Re: CO unit 74 2nd rifle?
I've spent some time in that area elk hunting, but that was years ago. According to the alminac, its supposed to be a pretty warm year, so the deer will still be up pretty high in the second season unless there is a good storm to start pushing them down. We hunt third season a few units away, and ev...
