May have found my dream job
May have found my dream job
So, about a week ago I went over to my dad's to bring him in to see the doctor (just a regular physical). He happens to live not to far away from the Cabela's in Gonzales, LA. I went to the Customer Service desk to inquire about the hiring process and asked to talk to someone in Human Resources.
After about 15 minutes a guy comes down and introduces hisself as do I. He told me they do all their hiring over the internet and I then asked, "Well, what does it take to get an interview?" Keep in mind I haven't shaved in a few days and wearing blue jeans and a flannel shirt. Much to my surprise he responded with, "Well, how about an interview now?"
His postition in the store is the Asset Protection Manager (a bit in my line of work in the military) and they are looking to hire a Firearms Greeter. You know, the guy that sits at the front of the store in the orange vest and checks to make sure any firearms coming in a clear and then escorts the customer to whatever department they need to go. The position falls under Asset Protection Services, which means when not manning to entrance I would be just wandering around the store looking for anybody with sticky fingers.
It is only a part time job that pays a few bucks more than minimum wage. Not a problem as I'll probably spend a bit more in the store than what the paycheck covers. Just waiting on the background check to clear, which shouldn't be a problem.
I spend just as much time at my dad's house as I do at my own. Might be kind of nice to have a job you look forward to going to each day. Oh, and the 20% employee discount can't be beat!

your right, it would be nice to have a job you look forward to going to everyday. i do 90% of the time, but that other 10% makes a guy wonder sometimes.
good luck to you. i hope you get the job!

Re: May have found my dream job
I frequant the Cabelas in Ft Worth and a couple a weeks ago when I walked in I noticed that there were more greeters than normal and that they were wearing orange vests. Right after I walked past them two of them yelled gun. I instantly hit the floor and scand the area. All the orange vest guys rushed toward the door and scarred the burn otu of a guy carring an incased rifle. I could only conclude that this was a training class for the position you are applying for. A regular looking fellow calmed the customer down and picked an orange vest guy to escort him to where he wanted to go. I picked myself up and looked around to see how much of a fool I might have made of myself, totally forgot what I went in there for. Good luck on the job.

Got a phone call a couple of hours ago.
I start next week as the store's newest firarms inspector/greeter! I'm wondering if that 20% employee discount applies to boats? You can bet I'll find out real quick!

right on ABERT! congrats to you, nothing like doing a job you like doing.
Re: May have found my dream job
Congrats! my understanding, from having used the employee discount cards that they send out every year and from another forum in which an employee shared...is that the discount varies depending on their margins; best discount is 40% on Cabelas brand clothing down to zero on guns and ammo, but most is around 20%. Good Luck!
Re: May have found my dream job
Just finished up with the first three days of training/orientation. So far I am liking the idea of working there. They sure are serious about not abusing the employee discount, I can tell you that. The discount does indeed on what you want to buy, anywhere from 5-25%, though 20% seems about the average.
Go back on Monday for more computer courses and firearms traing. After that, I guess I get critqued on inspecting 5 firearms under supervision until I get the seal of approval.
I'm still sure I'll spend more money in the store than I make. For some reason, they do frown upon shopping while on the clock
