Pulling out of summer slump

Post by sactribe » Sat Aug 31, 2013 10:23 am

This wasn't the greatest summer for finding sheds but I did have some memorable hikes and found some new areas. Things have picked up in the last few weeks and I am looking forward to the start of grouse season tomorrow. I am hoping to pick up some elk sheds while I'm at it. My two youngest kids passed their hunter safety and can't wait to hunt grouse and rabbit with me this year. I am also taking my family to Yellowstone for a week and am going to take a day or two doing some "catch and release" shed hunting in the park. I hear the sheds are thick if you get off the main trails. Here are some of my more recent finds. I'm up to 129 on the year (90 deer and 39 elk).

You've found more sheds this year that I've found in a lifetime. ha ha

Thanks for the pics, I always enjoy them.

I tried a new area yesterday and hiked 8-1/2 miles through some steep timber and scree-covered slopes to find some nice aspen flats and gentle slopes halfway up the mountain. I didn't find any grouse but found a couple old elk sheds and a large 4X4 deer set laying close to each other. The 3rd photo shows both sheds in the frame. One side has some chew marks on the back, but otherwise a very nice set. I also found a 5X5 dead bull with the skull off the ground and his face pointing up to the clouds. Interesting final resting position.

Nice!!!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison.
