Small shed big day.

Post by fatrooster » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:23 pm

While out elk hunting with a friend about two weeks ago I glassed up an elk shed. I didn't want to burn up valuable hunting time chasing sheds so I decided to go back and get it later. On November 23rd I loaded up my shed dogs and ATV and and set out to go get it. I went to the original spot where I glassed it and glassed it up again and picked out some distinct landmarks and was on my way but before I got very far I ran into a friend from work on top of the mountain. I showed him where I was headed and he decided to help me get there. After about 15 miles and lots of elevation loss and gain we got to the desired spot and parked the ATV's. He took his shotgun and his bird dog and started huntin' chukkar while me and my dogs went shed huntin'. We didn't go far when Daisy my yellow lab found a chalky deer antler. When we got about 30 yards from the elk antler she found it and commenced trying to figure out how to pick it up and bring it to me. She had a tough time at first but got the job done. Here are some pictures, hope you enjoy.

After all I went through to get it I ended up giving it to my friend which I really did not mind sharing. Can't wait for my next day out to do it all over again! fatrooster.

muleymadness, 2009 was the first year my shed dogs went shed hunting and Daisy is up to 32 unassisted shed finds. When I say unassisted I mean I'm only counting the antlers that she brings me that I didn't see first. If I counted the antlers that she finds that I saw first then she would probably be up around 60 to 70. The chocolate lab really isn't into it so I usually don't take her out with us anymore. I can't wait to see how Daisy does in 2010. fatrooster.
